Safety Tips for North Loop Residents

With the addition of the Twins Stadium, more people are learning about our neighborhood. The influx of people does create potential for crime. As residents, we need to be smart about protecting ourselves, our neighbors and our property.

Personal tips:

  1. -Never allow cars to follow you into your parking garage.

  2. -Be awkward and don’t hold the door open for people you don’t recognize.

  3. -Don’t buzz someone in if you don’t know them.

  4. -Keep bikes locked up.

  5. -Install a security system in your unit.

  6. -Keep all windows and doors of ground-level units locked.

  7. -Get to know the neighbors around your unit.

  8. -Leave a light on or use a timer on lights while out of town.

  9. -Have a neighbor collect your newspaper or stop delivery of it while out of town.

  10. -Do not share building security codes with anyone.

  11. -Be alert.

  12. -If something feels off, don’t be afraid to call the police.

Talk to your association about:

  1. -Upgrading security technology

  2. -Installation/usage of video cameras

  3. -Additional lighting or security signage

  4. -A visit from the Minneapolis Crime Prevention Specialist

  5. -Creating a building directory for the residents in the building

  6. -Finding ways to get to know the other residents in the building

Meet Anna Larson

Anna Larson, Peter Brown and their three-year-old son Magnus are proud residents of the 801 Washington Lofts. This Spring, the family will also welcome a baby girl to their North Loop home. After living in New York and downtown Philadelphia, they wanted to maintain the urban lifestyle when they moved to Minneapolis seven years ago. Even during the coldest days of winter, Anna, a business consultant, walked downtown to work the first five years of living in Minneapolis. Now, Peter, an urban redevelopment consultant, primarily works downtown and either walks or rides his bike.

Previously, once couples had children, moving to the suburbs seemed inevitable. Now, that trend seems to be changing. Anna stated, “Having lived in New York, central Philadelphia, and large cities outside the US, we have seen that families living in apartments do just fine.  Living in a condo allows us to spend more time on family and less on home maintenance. We love all the walking and biking possibilities that come with living in the North Loop, and we love our neighbors.  The one thing that would have caused us to move was schooling, but I have started doing some research, and I believe there are great, high-quality options available to us without moving.”

When Magnus was a baby, Anna became interested in connecting with other families of the North Loop. She leads North Loop Kids, a Yahoo forum, devoted to sharing ideas and information, building friendships and scheduling activities among families of the North Loop neighborhood. As a family they are very excited about the new playground and recommend Choo Choo Bob’s, a kid’s train store in St Paul.

When they aren’t cooking with locally grown vegetables and weather prevents them from eating on their patio, Peter and Anna enjoy neighborhood favorites such as, Be’Wiched, Bar La Grassa, Sapor, Toast and Club Jager. They also recommend ethnic cheap eats: Pho Tau Bay and Penninsula on Eat Street, Pagoda in Dinkytown, as well as The Midtown Global Market, which they bike to most summer weekends.  The Midtown Global Market has “a great play area where kids can play while adults eat and chat.”
